Draft an Introduction of the Study
Topic 3: Background and Introduction
In your introduction, you may identify the topic, field of study, and types and quality of research that has been conducted in this area. In this activity, you will describe in detail the context for conducting your study. Consider the introductions of the Exemplar Chapter 1s provided in an earlier activity of this Topic. Determine the features of the introductory paragraphs that set the context for the dissertation study and anticipate the sections to immediately follow – the background and statement of the problem as well as the purpose and significance of the study.

- What is your topic and interest in this focus?
- What field(s) of study have examined this topic and with what degree of success?
- Why might researchers and other stakeholders have a compelling interest in pursuing further research in this area?
- Remember that the introduction is analogous to you welcoming someone into the foyer of a large center-hall colonial home and preparing her or him for a grand tour. As you draft your introduction, point out the pathways you will take in the tour ahead, but remember that much will be told in each room of the home – or section of this chapter.
