Topic 2: Overview of the Dissertation Process


  1. By what date should your final, defended and approved dissertation be uploaded with the Graduate School?

    By the date of Commencement.

    It depends on when you want your degree to be conferred.

    You don’t have to upload your dissertation with the Graduate School.


  2. By when must you have defended your final dissertation draft to participate in Commencement in May?

    By the date of Commencement.

    Any time in that calendar year.

    By June 1.


  3. About how long do revisions after the final defense take?

    Plan for 2 days.

    Plan for a month.

    Plan for a week.


  4. How far in advance of the defense date do you need to send your final draft to your committee?

    Two weeks.

    One week.

    Three days.

    One Month.


  5. When should you start trying to schedule your final defense?

    When your chair says your draft is perfect.

    When you think you are ready.

    About 6 weeks before the date by which you want to defend.

    When your chair says you can.


  6. When should you begin your revisions to your first three chapters?

    When you have time.

    As soon after the proposal defense as possible.

    After you’ve finished the first draft of the other chapters.


  7. When should you submit your IRB proposal, and what additional certifications does the University require before you submit it? How long does that training take?

    Submit the proposal once you have passed your proposal defense. Complete the CITI training online and HIIPA if you are collecting health-related data, and these trainings take 2-3 hours each.
